Gradebook: Mark Calculation Methods
There are three methods in which the average mark for the marking period of each section can be calculated.
Each class section is configured to use one of these methods in Gradebook: Setup.
I. Points - total number of points the student earned divided by the number of maximum points that could have been earned. This calculation will not take into account the different category types.
Class 101.A Marking Pd. 1
Student | HW 1
max: 10 |
HW 2
max: 100 |
HW 3
max: 35 |
Quiz 1
max: 5 |
Quiz 2
max: 25 |
Test 1
max: 100 |
Term Average |
Doe, Jane | 10 | 90 | 35 | 4 | 25 | 95 | 259/275 = 94.18 |
Smith, John | 9 | 80 | 32 | 5 | 20 | 75 | 221/275 = 80.37 |
II. Weighted Categories by Points - a sub-total for each category will be calculated by adding up the points the student earned for the category, divided by the number of maximum points that could have been earned for that category. Multiply each category subtotal by the weight of the category and add up the category averages to get a term average.
Class 101.A Marking Pd. 1 / HW= 50 % ; Quiz = 20% ; Test = 30%
Student | HW 1
max: 10 |
HW 2
max: 100 |
HW 3
max: 35 |
Quiz 1
max: 5 |
Quiz 2
max: 25 |
Test 1
max: 100 |
Term Average |
Smith, John | 9 | 80 | 32 | 5 | 20 | 75 | (83.45 * .50) + (83.33 * .20) + (75 * .30) = 80.86 |
HW (50%): 121/145 = 83.45 | Quiz (20%): 25/30 = 83.33 | Test (30%): 75/100 = 75 |
III. Weighted Categories by Percentage - Weighted Categories by Percentage - a sub-total for each category will be calculated by percentage of each assignment. The number of points the student earned for a specific assignment divided by the maximum number of points that could have been earned will yield the percentage for each assignment. The sub-total for each category will be calculated by adding up the total assignment percentage divided by the number of assignments for that category. Multiply each category subtotal by the weight of the category and add up the category averages to get a term average.
Class 101.A Marking Pd. 1 / HW= 50 % ; Quiz = 20% ; Test = 30%
Student | HW 1
max: 10 |
HW 2
max: 100 |
HW 3
max: 35 |
Quiz 1
max: 5 |
Quiz 2
max: 25 |
Test 1
max: 100 |
Term Average |
Smith, John | 9 | 80 | 32 | 5 | 20 | 75 | (87.14 * .50) + (90 * .20) + (75 * .30) = 84.07 |
9/10 = 90% | 80/100 = 80% | 32/35 = 91.43% | 5/5 = 100% | 20/25 = 80% | 75/100 = 75%
HW (50%): (90+80+91.43) / 3 = 87.14 | Quiz (30%): (100 + 80) / 2 = 90 | Test (30%): 75 |
TIP: In Weighted Categories by Percentage, each assignment is marked out of 100%. If a teacher gives an assignment worth 10 points maximum and a student scores a 9, that would be considered a 90/100. In Weighted Category by Points, the assignment would be counted as 9/10.
